Sports Medicine

Responsibilities: Diagnose, treat, and help prevent injuries that occur during sporting events, athletic training, and physical activities. Diagnose or treat disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Order and interpret the results of laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging procedures.

Salary: In 2015, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the median annual salary of athletic trainers was $44,670. According to PayScale.com, physicians who specialize in sports medicine received a median annual salary of $185,007. Furthermore, the job prospects in the field of healthcare are strong.

Education Required: Becoming a sports medicine physician requires obtaining a bachelor's degree and a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. During their undergraduate years, students will need to take pre-med classes in biology, anatomy and chemistry. Medical school is a 4-year program in which the last two years include clinical rotations.
